A former Western Australian Under 18 player, Smoker was first drafted by West Coast with selection 30 in the 1995 National Draft after topping West Perth's goalkicking, He spent two years on the list at the Eagles but didn't play a senior game, remaining with West Perth. Unable to break into the Eagles side, he was traded to Melbourne in exchange for selection #34 in the 1997 Draft.

Smoker impressed with four goals in his third game, a win against Brisbane at the Gabba, and played 14 matches in a row before losing his spot late that year. He played just one game in 1999 before being delisted at the end of the season.

After failing to find another club through the National Draft, Smoker joined VFL side Williamstown, where he played 94 games, including the 2003 senior premiership and a reserves flag, before returning to West Perth in 2005 where he remained until the end of 2009.
