Unable to finish any higher than 14th, Melbourne was playing for pride while Collingwood needed to win, and preferably with a percentage boost, to help their top four chances. The Pies did all the early attack but were unable to capitalise, and were only a point up at quarter time after a late Jacob van Rooyen goal. It looked like they would go on to an easy win after kicking the first goal of the second half to open a three goal lead, before Melbourne's best period of the game carried to a 10 point lead at three quarter time. They were unable to hold on, and spent the last few minutes desperately trying to find a goal to draw the game but were unable to score again and went down to their sixth loss for the season out of six games decided by under 10 points.

Best were Gawn, Oliver, and Bowey.

Harry Sharp replaced Jai Culley in the fourth quarter after Culley landed on his head in a marking contest. Harrison Petty was fined $1000 for striking.
