In their last engagement of the season Melbourne relied heavily on recruits to fill their numbers, and with six new players in their ranks they were beaten easily. Injuries had cut a swathe through the side, and they had further bad luck with debutante Denton breaking his jaw in the first quarter and being forced to leave his only league game.

They were down to 17 players and the Blues took full advantage, it was only when Carlton relaxed in the last quarter that Melbourne managed to more than double their goal tally and avoid a 100 point defeat.

During the half-time break secretary Amos Norcott was presented with a set of gold spectacles by the players.

Best were H. Purse, Hurrey and Bowe. Four of the rookies would play for the club again in 1906.
