Born in Scotland, Marshall emigrated to Australia with his family in 1888. Originally at Scotch from 1900 to 1902 - where he played in premiership teams for the first two seasons - Marshall joined Melbourne as a 20-year-old but only managed a single game in 1905.
Marshall played 11 games in the 1908 inaugural University side. During his career he was studying to become a minister, and was later moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria.
