After a rocky start to the season which saw them losing heavily in round 1 and then falling over the line in Round 2, the Demons finally had a comfortable win even if it did take three quarters to break free of the Saints. Melbourne were favourites in what was billed as 'match of the day' against one of the few unbeaten sides left in the competition, but at half time St Kilda held a three goal lead and were looking like they'd comfortably extend their run of wins.

After conceding the first goal St Kilda were the better side, but their kicking for goal was poor and they kicked four points in a row. Poor forward play also cost Melbourne dearly, but they weren't even getting chances to score thanks to a lack of teamwork and Norm Smith uncharacteristically dropping marks.

The Demons finally started scoring early in the second, but could only managed behinds, and St Kilda extended the margin by a point before half time. A six goal to three third quarter gave the home side a one point advantage going into the last term, and with their visitors rapidly fading they piled on another six to one to easily take the points in the end.

Muller and Fischer were best. One of the driving forces behind Melbourne's comeback was Allan La Fontaine, who had been poor in the first half but was one of his side's best in the second. Ron Kimberley was encouraging on debut at full back.

Best were Baggott, Fischer and Jones. Truscott was 19th man.
