With their forwards having failed to fire for weeks, and the three sectional rounds to end the season approaching quickly, Melbourne went down to defeat again in a listless match. They were without Moodie, Wood, Moysey, Wardill, Moriarty and Sowden and relying on three ex-players to fill in so it was a credit to them to get as close as they did.

The ruck was the only place that Melbourne that were superior, and after leading at half time Essendon used the wind to their advantage to open up a 13 point gap at the last change. For the first time all day there was fire in the game during the last term as Melbourne tried to use the breeze to win and Essendon attempted to hold them out.

Best were McGinis, Young and V. Cumberland.
