After a wobbly few weeks thanks to injury and inconsistent form, Melbourne had had three Saturdays of rest to get themselves back together after a huge victory over Essendon had pushed them back into fourth place in front of Carlton on percentage.
After having been level with Geelong in a four way tie for top of the ladder a few weeks previous, Melbourne were now two wins behind them so it was no surprise that the Pivotonians got the job done on their own ground and stayed in the hunt for top spot.
On the hand Melbourne's loss, and a win by Carlton at Glenferrie Oval put Melbourne back into fifth - a full game behind the Blues but with a superior percentage if they could pick up four points on Carlton in the remaining two matches of the year.
After an even first quarter in cold, showery conditions Melbourne were never in the hunt again. Geelong added a point to the margin at quarter time and then opened up a match winning lead with a five goal to one third term. The visitors chipped away at the lead in the last quarter but they were too far behind.
Chadwick, Barnes and Collins were best. Streeter was a late replacement for Johnson due to the conditions.
