On an ideal day for football a large crowd turned out to see the return match between the two sides. Melbourne had won the previous meeting, but South had their revenge against a side which was decimated by injury.

The home side took the early lead, and held Melbourne goalless in the first quarter but though they got the first goal of the second quarter, the margin was all but erased by half time. Inaccurate kicking kept South from running away with the game in the third quarter, and despite holding Melbourne scoreless they only led by 15 points at the last change due to a late flourish.

South held on in the face of a desperate comeback attempt by wasting as much time as possible playing the ball close to the boundary line.

Best were V. Cumberland, Wardill and McGinis.

Official records showed Dan Moriarty playing, it has been shown that Leo Rankin appeared in his place.
