Esmond "Tommy" McConville was recommended to Melbourne by Percy Wilson but due to his job as a teacher it took two seasons to convince him to travel to the city. The closest they got until 1927 was a quarter of a 1926 practice match. When they did lure him to the MCG, Melbourne got a solid goalkicking rover/forward, who provided good service over three seasons. He played for a VFL representative side against the Wimmera League in 1927.
In 1930, McConville was cleared to Beeac when he moved to the town for work.
His grandson Peter McConville went on to play 194 games for Carlton and St Kilda.

Notes
Real first name Esmond, but also shown as W. McConville in some sources. His four game ban likely came from a number of incidents including throwing a ball at a player.
