Melbourne win by 53 points
3 - Andy Lovell
2 - Brett Lovett
Melbourne jumped to a 31 point lead in the first quarter before Richmond kicked five goals to two in the third quarter to claw back the margin to 14 going into the last quarter. Their brief resurgence, which had been aided by four goals to Jeff Hogg, fizzled out at three quarter time and the Demons booted seven last quarter goals to win.
In an often spiteful game Rod Grinter was suspended for seven matches (including three from a previous suspended sentence) for striking Mark Lee, and received another six weeks with four suspended for striking future teammate Andy Goodwin.
Best were Newport, Lovett and Yeats.
