Born in England, Goodwin didn't play football until he was 18-years-old. He attended a wedding at Wandin Football Club and was invited to join them. After winning club and competition best and fairest awards he played two games for the St. Kilda reserves, and was rejected by Fitzroy. He played the first four games of the 1987 VFA season for Box Hill before joining Richmond where he debuted late in the year as a 24 year old.
Not playing his 50th match until 1991 when he was 28, Goodwin was delisted by the Tigers at the end of that year and was selected by Melbourne in the pre-season draft, playing two seasons before retiring at the end of 1993.
Goodwin was coach of Devonport from 1994 to 1996 and also played for Frankston in 1997. After losing the Grand Final to Sandringham, Goodwin returned to Tasmania to play the first five games of the 1998 season before rejoining Wandin. He retired in 2003 at 39 years old on doctor's advice after suffering his 22nd broken nose.
Coached Kinglake in 2014.
