Melbourne jumped to a 31 point lead in the first quarter before Richmond kicked five goals to two in the third quarter to claw back the margin to 14 going into the last quarter. Their brief resurgence, which had been aided by four goals to Jeff Hogg, fizzled out at three quarter time and the Demons booted seven last quarter goals to win.

In an often spiteful game Rod Grinter was suspended for seven matches (including three from a previous suspended sentence) for striking Mark Lee in the stomach. He thought Lee had hit him but it was another player. Grinter received another six weeks with four suspended for striking future teammate Andy Goodwin. He was reported on the day for striking Lee, and was cited on video evidence for the strike on Goodwin.

Best were Newport, Lovett and Yeats.
