Melbourne continued their rise as the big improvers of the competition with their fourth win in five games, but the result might have been closer if the home side could have managed to kick straight. Carlton's startling inaccuracy was caused by Princes Park being underwater when the match started. By the time it finished the ground was a quagmire. Even more remarkable considering the conditions, a wind and the freezing cold, was Melbourne's accuracy.

Despite some suggestion that the match should be played on Monday due to the conditions, the league's Adverse Weather Committee chose not not to make everyone come back two days later. Fans who showed up were instead treated to a game where most kicks were off the ground.

The Blues were out to a seven point lead late in the first quarter before conceding a free and a goal that cut the margin to one. All the play was in Carlton's favour early in the second, but when their forwards failed it proved deadly. Melbourne were back in front shortly before half time but conceded a late goal to go into the sheds five points down.

Amidst more heavy rain Carlton's 0.7 during the third quarter further hurt their cause, and they would eventually fall just short of their own league record for the most behinds kicked in a match. The visitors led by 19 at the last change, and soon made sure of victory with a goal through Corbett.

It was Melbourne's first win against Carlton since 1913, and their first at Princes Park since they held the Blues to 1.8 in Round 16, 1904.

Corbett, Haines and Allen were best.

Newspaper reports put the attendance at "some 5000 or 6000"
