A talented cricketer in the Ballarat area, House was lured to Melbourne to play with the MCC on promise of a job as a groundskeeper, but impressed as a footballer too and was a regular for the next four years. He then served as curator of the Prahran ground until 1932 before accepting a position with Richmond and becoming curator of Punt Road. A versatile player, he could appear in the centre, centre-half back or centre-half forward

He represented Victoria against New South Wales in 1921 but only played two matches in 1923 and was cleared to VFA side Prahran the next year where he was captain/coach. He played 14 games in his first year with them, but only one in 1915.
