Last Game as Coach
John Beckwith

Moments before the players ran out onto the turf John Beckwith announced his retirement as coach to them. Ironically enough as Ron Barassi had continually been linked to the Demons, and would again be in the papers the next Monday, he would end his coaching career against the Blues and his old teammate.

The shock announcement explained the desperate performance that the Demons put in against their far better credentialed opponents in the first quarter. The went into half time two points ahead, and even though the Blues took an 11 point lead at the last change Melbourne were back to a point in front when Adrian Gallagher kicked a goal at the start of time on in the last term to put the Blues back in front.

Alex Jesaulenko kicked his 100th goal for the season during the match.

Best were Davis, Sullivan and Townsend
