The ruckman debuted in 1970 after a clearance battle where he had to be freed by both St Kilda and VFA side Prahran before he could be added to Melbourne's list. After winning his clearance his first game was then delayed by a hamstring injury at training.

After 13 games in his first seasons Payne resigned from the club in March 1971 due to business commitments. He returned to Prahran to continue his career, winning their best and fairest in his first season and staying there until 1976.

Named on the interchange of the Old Melburnians Team of the Century in 1999.
