Initially travelling to Melbourne for a holiday on the advice of his father, Burgmann trained with Melbourne in 1969 and won a spot on the list. He had previously represented the Goulburn Valley school representative team and captained the Victorian Schoolboys as a 15-year-old.
Played Reserves games in 1969 before making his debut a year later. Played as a wingman.
In 1973 Burgmann was cleared to Mooroopna, in 1974 he captain/coached Finlay, and in 1984 captain coached Shepparton. Also coached Katandra.
Burgmann's son Shane played for the Demons in the 1990s. His father Jack had played one game for Richmond in 1938.
