Initially travelling to Melbourne for a holiday on the advice of his father Jack, who played one game for Richmond in 1938, Burgmann trained with Melbourne in 1969 and won a spot on the list. He had previously represented the Goulburn Valley school representative team and captained the Victorian Schoolboys as a 15-year-old.

Burgmann played Reserves games in 1969 before making his debut a year later. The wingman played 30 games in three seasons before being cleared to Mooroopna in 1973. The next year he captain/coached Finlay, and in 1984 captain/coached Shepparton. Also coached Katandra.

Burgmann's son Shane played for the Demons in the 1990s.
