A half-forward/winger with good aerial skills, Lane was a mid-season signing in 1951 and made his debut two weeks later.

He was also quick, winning the 1952 Eltham Gift race, and competing in the 1953 Stawell Gift.

Lane retired from VFL football at the end of 1956 to concentrate on his business interests and played for McKinnon in the Federal League from 1957 until the end of 1959.

Served as VFL Company Secretary and VFL Park Ground Manager in 1978. Appointed to the football club board by the MCC for 1985, and became a high ranking official of the VFL. In 1989 he was named a life member of the VFL.
