Secretary Jim Cardwell had been forced to hose down reports of a rift between players and coach Allan La Fontaine after the humiliating 103 point loss to Footscray the previous Saturday. His side responded with an improved performance against the best team in the competition in the second week of the split round but still remained on one win for the season.

Mike Woods dominated in the ruck and was one of the key reasons the side did so well. In deplorable conditions the Demons were four goals down in the first quarter but shortly after the second began the margin was back to a point.

Melbourne kept Geelong close into the third quarter, and at one point the margin was just three points, but even though the muddy conditions should have affected their style of play more, Geelong shot away thanks to their smaller players and lead by 15 points at the last change before running away with a 35 point victory.

Best were Woods, McMahen and Clarke. Ferguson replaced Smeaton at half time, and Hutchins replaced Johnson (injured leg) in the last quarter.
