Dumped by the Tigers after nine seasons, Egan debuted for the Demons in the first round of the 1991 season and played in a team that booted just two goals. He never played for the senior side again, leaving him as one of the all-time lowest scoring players in MFC history. He retired in mid-June.

In Round 22, 1984 Egan had been reported for punching Melbourne forward David Williams before the first bounce when the Demon had tried to shake his hand.

Egan quit Melbourne in the week after Round 12 and joined Red Cliffs the same year, stayed there until 1994, as captain/coach in his last two seasons.
