Williams didn't play football until he was 17 due to knee problems, but soon became a prolific goalkicker in the Goulburn Valley Football League. Recruited to Melbourne, he played Under 19s and Reserves before making his senior debut in 1983. He played 22 games in his first two full seasons before returning to the country and missing 1985.

He returned to Melbourne in 1986, and while most of his season was destroyed by injury, Williams kicked nine goals in the record-breaking Round 21 win over North Melbourne. Another 39 goals in 1987 and 33 in 1988 helped Melbourne to play finals. Missed 1989 with a knee injury, and after being left off Melbourne's list Richmond took him in the 1990 Pre-Season Draft, despite Melbourne's claims that they intended to re-draft him. Another knee injury meant he never played for the Tigers.

Williams returned to Rochester and won a GVFL flag as Captain/Coach in 1992 alongside fellow ex-Demon Jamie Duursma. Spent 16 years as coach of the Swans before leaving for Kyabram in 2007, where he remained through 2009.
