Problems with his knees when he was a child prevented Williams from playing football until he was 17, but when he finally got around to it he became a prolific goalkicker in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

Recruited to Melbourne, Williams played Under 19s and Reserves before making his senior debut the next year. He played 22 games in his first two full seasons before returning to the country and missing the 1985 season.

Williams returned in 1986, and while most of his season was destroyed by injury, his fourth game of the year saw Williams help himself to 9 goals in a record breaking Round 21 victory over North Melbourne.

A further 39 goals in 1987 and 33 in 1988 helped the Demons to two rare finals appearances and a Grand Final. After the massive loss to Hawthorn in the 1988 decider he remained on the list the next year without playing a game due to a knee injury. After Melbourne dropped him from their list who joined Richmond via the pre-season draft early in 1990 but suffered another knee injury and never played for the Tigers.

Williams returned to Rochester and won a GVFL flag as Captain/Coach in 1992 alongside fellow ex-Demon Jamie Duursma. Spent 16 years as coach of the Swans before leaving for Kyabram in 2007, where he remained through 2009.
