Debuting with Richmond in 1982, Egan battled injuries including a broken ankle and broken shoulder to play 125 games until the end of 1989. A versatile player who go forward or in the middle, he was traded to Melbourne and debuted in Round 1, 1991. The Demons only kicked two goals for the day, Egan was dropped and didn't return to the senior side. He retired from AFL football in the week after Round 12, joining Red Cliffs until 1994, captain/coaching the side in his last two seasons.

In Round 22, 1984 Egan was reported for punching Melbourne forward David Williams before the first bounce, reportedly when Williams tried to shake his hand.
