A Thirds graduate after debuting in 1954. He appeared in a Grand Final in each of his career seasons and was on the losing side of just four games in his career. He was a reserve in the 1957 and 1959 premiership sides. Unfortunately one of his losses with the 1958 Grand Final, where he had been a surprise selection to replace the injured Clyde Laidlaw despite not playing a senior match since Round 2.

Brenchley moved to Norwood in the SANFL for 1960, and remained there until the end of 1961 for 30 games.

He returned to the Demons in 1962 but didn't play a game. He then appeared twice for VFA side Moorabbin before joining Waverley where he remained through 1966. After temporarily retiring earlier in the season due to illness, he returned but was banned for the last few weeks of that season and 12 weeks of 1967 for striking and charging an umpire. He was cleared of a charge of using abusive language towards the umpire. In his defence he claimed that after having a free kick paid against him for throwing the ball away he had tried to demonstrate to the umpire that he hadn't thrown it and was shocked to be reported. The president of Waverley pointed out that he had never been reported in 210 senior games but it didn't help his cause and the lengthy ban was handed out.

Brenchley coached Camberwell in 1970 and 1971. He had retired from playing before his first VFA season but made a comeback midway through the year. He died of Leukaemia in 1991 aged 54.
