Kardinia Park had been a hoodoo ground for the Demons, having only won their once in 10 years, but the reigning wooden spooners were in a rebuilding phase and despite a courageous performance provided little resistance to their visitors.

Even without the injured Ron Barassi and Frank Adams Melbourne were far too strong for their young opponents. The Demon ruck division dominated and continually gave their rovers the first use of the ball. Once the ball reached the forward line most of the attacks went through the flanks where Tunbridge and Case were instrumental in both kicking and setting up goals. Johnson and Webb played as decoy for each other at various times, with one leading to drag Geelong defenders out of position and the other falling back to goal.

It was Geelong's lowest score against Melbourne for 30 years, and their worst against them at home since 1915.

Best were Case, Tunbridge and Johnson. Laidlaw (bruised hip) was replaced by Fenton-Smith at three quarter time, and Ridley by Crompton in the last quarter.
