In the first half of the split round Melbourne's first home game sold to the Gabba earned the club $300,000 but may have thrown away any chance they had of rebounding from the humiliating loss at the hands of Collingwood in Round 11.

Jeff Farmer returned from injury and was impressive, but despite kicking the first two goals of the quarter Melbourne couldn't hold back the Lion tide and soon found themselves well behind. The Demons got within ten points early in the third term the Lions steadied to pile on 16 goals in the fourth quarter en route to a big win which forced the Demons down to 13th. Five Lion goals from free kicks hadn't hurt their chances - Alistair Lynch with eight for the winners.

Best were Yze, Nicholson and Neitz.
