The brother of Laurie Mithen was recruited before the 1956 season, and was set to play the year at Wangaratta before staying at Ormond. When he returned to Melbourne club the next year he couldn't earn a permanent senior spot.

He left the club after 1958 to join Warragul but remained on the Demons supplementary list while playing there. He appeared in 1960 pre-season training but did not make the senior side.

Mithen trained with St. Kilda in 1961 but was not signed by the Saints. He re-emerged again in 1962 to play 4 games for South Melbourne before joining VFA side Waverley under former Demon Ian Thorogood. The side finished second in the competition in 1966 after which Mithen retired.
