After debuting for Drouin as a 16-year-old in 1962, Gallus attracted Melbourne's attention but they were unable to secure a clearance for him in 1963 or 1964. He had also been pursued by Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, South Melbourne and St Kilda, but chose Melbourne. Gallus was shown on the Demons' list in 1964 but not play.

Drouin allowed Gallus to join Melbourne for six matches in 1965 but he couldn't escape the Reserves. He spent the year battling leg issues caused by a bone spur, before being cut from the list in the 1966 pre-season and joining VFA side Waverley. He had originally intended to return to Drouin, but a teaching appointment in the Dandenong area convinced him to remain in the city. The next year he joined Maffra, where he had been transferred as a teacher, and after another transfer he played with Bairnsdale in 1968 and 1969, before rejoining Maffra in 1970.

In 1971, Gallus was approached to rejoin Melbourne as a 25-year-old. He made his VFL debut in the opening game, kicking three of his 31 goals for the season. He only played eight games in 1972 after being transferred to a school that hampered his ability to get to the MCG for training. At the end of the year he was approached by Sandy Bay, but his transfer was held up until the Tasmania club paid a $1000 transfer fee. Gallus played for Tasmania, but returned home in 1974 and joined Warragul. He became their playing coach in 1977, spending two seasons there before playing for Moe in 1979.

In 1980 he rejoined Drouin as playing coach, then played two more years as a player only, before coaching Warragul Industrials in 1983 and 1984. He then returned to Drouin, before retiring and acting as selector and committeeman. He played his 100th and final game for the club in 1986 when called up during an injury crisis. In 1988 he was the club president.
