Initially unable to win a clearance from Drouin in 1963 or early 1964, Gallus graduated from the Under 19s to make the Melbourne list in 1964 but couldn't break out of the Reserves and joined VFA side Waverley in 1966. He had originally intended to return to Drouin, but a teaching appointment in the Dandenong area convinced him to remain in the city.

In 1967 he moved to Wangaratta, then played for Bairnsdale in 1969 and Maffa in 1970. He won two Latrobe Valley Best and Fairest awards in a row before finally returning to the VFL and debuting for Melbourne in the first round of 1971.

He kicked three goals on debut, and 31 in 20 games across his first season but only played eight games in 1972 for eight goals. Gallus' career high of four goals came in Round 7, 1971 against North Melbourne.

In 1973 Tasmanian club Sandy Bay paid a $1000 transfer fee to secure him. The next year he moved to Warragul and later played for Drouin again.
