Hawthorn announced the signing of the Carey school team captain in their 1965 annual report, before he switched to Melbourne after becoming friends with Ross Dillon and Peter Smith. Chapman won his a spot on Melbourne's list after kicking 7.8 in a practice match, and contributed one of just four Melbourne goals in the opening round, but only played one more senior game. That season he returned to playing for Carey.

In April 1967, Chapman was cleared to Hawthorn and played with their Reserves. After his football career, Chapman founded the company Sportsworld Media, which sold for £75 million pounds in 2002. He amassed a fortune of $500m from sports marketing, media, and property, as well as owning 35 golf clubs around the world. In 2019 he was made a member of the Order of Australia for charitable initiatives.
