The search for a new full-forward had been one of the stories of Melbourne's pre-season, along with a terrible run of injuries, and after booting just four goals in the opening round defeat by the Saints it didn't look as if it could get any worse for Melbourne but Hawthorn had other ideas.

On the day they opened a new stand at Glenferrie Oval the Hawks were ruthless in restricting Melbourne to a goal at half-time and just three for the match. They only scored seven themselves thanks to poor kicking but it was more than enough to run out comfortable winners.

Despite the Demons kicking one of their three goals in the first term, and only being five points down at the break, their cause wasn't helped when Ed Burston hurt his ankle during the first quarter. Restricted by the injury he was sent to full-forward but when it became abundantly clear that he could barely move Norm Smith tried to replace him. Burston though refused to go and stayed on until the quarter time break when he was interchanged.

Staring down the barrel of his greatest crisis as Smith ordered his troops to be ready for earlier and longer training session during the week. He had gone easy on his troops earlier in the year, mindful of avoiding any more injuries, but with two humiliating losses on the board set out to whip his troops back into shape with some good old fashioned punishment training.

It was Melbourne's lowest ever score at the ground.

Best were Anderson, Alves and Groom. Burston (strained ankle) was replaced by Chapman at quarter time.
