The son of famous sports reporter Alf Brown was promoted from the Demons supplementary list in 1971. He played six senior games but his major success was in the Reserves where he won the Gardiner Medal for best player in 1971.
Looking for greater opportunities he joined Essendon midway through 1972. After one game for the Bombers in 1973 he switched to the VFA for 16 games with Port Melbourne in 1973. He remained there through 1974 and was cleared to Prahran in 1975. He sat out of football in 1978 because of vision problems, before joining Brunswick in mid-1979 after switching to contact lenses. Brown stayed at Brunswick through 1981 and later coached their Reserves.
