After a brief stint with Collingwood as a junior defender, Turner joined Melbourne for two seasons. He played Under 19s and Reserves during 1988 and 1989.
Turner injured his back falling on the Astroturf surface in Toronto during the 1989 Exhibition Match vs Geelong, which set him back before the 1990 season. He didn't play a senior game before crossing to Richmond in the mid-season draft. He played Reserves at Richmond in 1990 before graduating to the senior side in 1991, where he remained until 1999.
