A follower/centre half-back, who also played forward in some games, "Kanga" Scanlan crossed to Footscray, along with brother Frank at the start of 1949. He had also been pursued by Fitzroy earlier that year. He was a regular at Footscray until 1953, then played at Moorabbin in 1954.

He was known as a strong mark but as a poor kick. The Round 8, 1947 Football Record described him as "one of the worst kicks in the league".
