Enlisted in the Army in 1915 and served in World War I as a member of the 46th Battalion.

Recruited to Melbourne in 1920, he played three games. McIntyre was cleared to Footscray before the 1921 season and remained with them until they joined the league in 1925, after which he played 13 more VFL games. Also played with Brighton in 1928.
