The second half of the season began with Melbourne's finals hopes fading away after three straight losses, including to the winless Geelong the previous Saturday, and by quarter time at the Lake Oval their hopes had taken a mortal blow.

With a win so vital to get them back on track the Redlegs conceded five goals in the first term, replying with just two behinds. South were renowned as poor starters, and Melbourne had the best of the match early on but could only kick points so when South started scoring they got a taste for it and ran away in what was otherwise a poor match.

The visitors kicked three goals to one in the second but a poor third term left them well behind and they failed to take advantage of the scoring end in the last quarter.

Best were Corbett, Allen and Haines.
