With Melbourne having lost five in a row and Collingwood struggling to field a side due to an extensive injury list the stage was hardly set for a classic, and the match failed to hit any great heights. At least the scores were close in the end, but early in the game Collingwood were the only side in the match. They had a five goal lead with the breeze at quarter time, and added a further goal to the gap when Melbourne were using the wind in the second.

Four goals in the third quarter got Melbourne back into the match, and when they kept the Magpies to three behinds in the final quarter it allowed the Reds to at least claim something out of another loss.

Best were Haines, Boyd and Gray.
