Gillespie-Jones played as an amateur, but had to appeal to the Melbourne University Sports Union for the right to play league football without losing his right to play for them in the future. After two games a knee injury ended his season.

After the 1936 season he joined Allan La Fontaine on a three-month sailing trip to the United States, working on a freight ship. He hoped that regular work would help cure his leg issues, but after returning he didn't play another game for Melbourne. He returned to Old Melburnians in 1936, but after training with the Demons in the 1937 pre-season, he instead crossed to Fitzroy. He played 17 games with them in 1939, but was never a regular again. He flirted with a move back to the amateurs, and to Carlton, who he'd been linked to before the 1934 season but stayed until 1942. After the war he returned to play one senior game for Fitzroy in each of 1945 and 1946, also playing 49 Seconds games for them, and serving as captain in 1946. That year he was also the honourary coach of all University sides.

After his football career, Gillespie-Jones practised as a barrister and worked as a football writer for The Argus. In 1950 he suffered a rare eye disease that threatened his sight.
