The home side started as hot favourites based on a battling first Saturday win with a player short in the last quarter and Melbourne's big loss to Essendon but were nearly surprised.
In a poor game Geelong were dragged down to Melbourne's level, and inaccurate kicking kept them in the game until the last quarter when they launched a furious assault on the Pivotonians in the last term. Led by nine goals from Maurie Gibb their accurate kicking included two 'posters'.
Best were Wartman, Gillespie-Jones and La Fontaine. Niven suffered a bruised kidney and Jones a concussion.
