Statistical categories led:
Biggest win and highest score against Essendon

Melbourne had their first - and only - game against one of the league's four expansion teams in the second last game of the season, and came away with a comfortable win that left them some hope of catching Brisbane for top spot on the ladder.

Essendon struggled to score, but the home side failed to put them away until after time. Three goals to nil in the third quarter made sure of victory before neither team kicked a goal in the final term.

Best were Paxman, Gillard and Heath.
