Originally picked by Geelong at selection #14 in the 2018 AFLW National Draft, Purcell played 19 games over three seasons with the Cats, and won their 2020 best and fairest. She suffered a serious knee injury in early 2021 and requested a trade to Melbourne at the end of the year. After recovering from her injury, Purcell broke into the side midway through the year, retaining her position through the finals series.

She played every game for Melbourne in the 2022 spring season, gathering the most possessions of any player on the side, finishing third in the Best and Fairest, and being named All Australian. Purcell's year culminated by playing in Melbourne's maiden premiership, and she remained a fixture in the Demon midfield in 2023, playing every game. Signed a two year contract extension at the end of the year. A severe facial fracture in the last practice game of the 2024 pre-season kept Purcell out for the first seven games of the season. She returned in Round 7B and played the last four games of the year.
