At a ground where they traditionally struggled, with just two wins in the 21st century, Melbourne dropped to 0-4 for the season after another poor attacking performance. After Christian Petracca kicked the first goal, Geelong replied with the next five. The margin was reduced to 15 after three goals in four from midway through the second quarter, and to 10 points when Daniel Turner kicked the first after half time.
The visitors were unable to take advantage, and failed to kick a goal in the final term as Geelong ran away with an easy win.
Substitute Charlie Spargo, in his 100th game, replaced Harry Sharp in the fourth quarter.
Best were Oliver, Gawn, and May. Bayley Fritsch was fined $1500 for rough conduct.
