Teams kicking with the breeze got 33 goals, while there was only four at the other end.

Melbourne had the advantage first, but were wasteful in kicking four goals from nine scoring shots. The Bombers then piled on a monstrous 10.7 to 1.2 in the second quarter, and with the use of the wind in their favour in the last quarter they were in an almost unbeatable position. The Demons had a crack, closing the gap to two points at the last change, but were unable to successfully counter attack in the last term and went down by six goals.

Best were Alves, Bourke and Molloy. Foster was replaced by Clark and Hardeman by Burgmann in the last quarter. Alves suffered a cut eye.
