Lowest score and Biggest loss in Round 24
Melbourne's disappointing season ended in a low-scoring defeat in what may have been a marquee last round match under different circumstances. Collingwood retained microscopic hope of qualifying, but required a massive win and other results to go their way so the game was effectively a dead rubber. After an easy win a week earlier, Melbourne's scoring troubles returned as their injury depleted side was comfortably beaten. By half time it was clear that the Pies couldn't win by the required margin, leaving both sides playing hte game out with nothing on the line. With nine minutes left in the final quarter nearby lightning caused the game to be halted for over 20 minutes.
Best were Salem, Langdon and Pickett. Bailey Laurie replaced Jake Bowey (knee) at half time. Kysaiah Pickett was suspended for three matches for rough conduct, Marty Hore was fined $2500 for forceful front-on contact. Jake Lever (illness) was replaced in the selected side by Taj Woewodin.
