With the Hawks holding the motivation of playing for a spot in the top four, Melbourne's only interests in the second last game of the season were pride, the 250 game milestone of premiership defender Steven May, and trying to give caretaker coach Troy Chaplin a maiden victory. May's day turned sour when he was easily beaten by Hawthorn's Jack Gunston, who went on to kick seven goals after a hot start in the first quarter.
Melbourne had dealt with a misfiring forward line all year, and struggled to outscore Gunston collectively until three goals in the dying minutes helped more than double their score in the last quarter, and carried their final total beyond what was at one point looking like one of their all-time lowest tallies against the Hawks.
Best were Gawn, Oliver, and Petracca
Jake Melksham replaced Tom McDonald at half time. Tom Sparrow was fined $1000 for careless umpire contact.
