After their first win in six weeks, Melbourne came back to earth a Carlton side coming off a four game losing streak. The Demons were within a goal late in the first quarter when a 50 metre penalty against Kade Chandler gifted Carlton a goal and a handy eight point break at the first change. They only added three points in the second term, before a revival after half time briefly had them back in front.

The margin was less than a goal in the dying minutes when 200 gamer Clayton Oliver was denied a free kick at Melbourne's end of the ground, before giving away the free that led to Carlton's sealer shortly after. It was Melbourne's fourth successive loss to the Blues by under 10 points.

Best were Pickett, Gawn, and McVee. Xavier Lindsay replaced Koltyn Tholstrup in the third quarter. Steven May was reported for rough conduct, and left the game with concussion in the fourth quarter. He was referred directly to the Tribunal and suspended for three games.
