Melbourne won their second successive ANZAC Day eve game, improving their record to 6-0 for the season. They had to overcome poor kicking, starting 0.6 before two late first quarter goals, and a further 1.6 in the second quarter.
The decisive break came in the third term. After conceding the first goal, the Demons found their accuracy at last to boot the next five and set up a handy last quarter lead. An early Sam Weideman goal was enough to hold Richmond at bay, and another strong defensive effort restricted the Tigers to a single goal in the final term.
Clayton Oliver won the Checker Hughes Medal for Best on Ground. Also amongst the best were Ed Langdon and Max Gawn. Toby Bedford was an unused substitute.
