Melbourne went into the game with six enforced changes, but St Kilda was almost equally handicapped by absences. The visitors ruck division shaded the locals but Melbourne's positional players won across the ground, and their winning margin would have been even more comfortable if they hadn't kicked poorly for goal. Leith was a chief offender but had the misfortune of hitting the post a number of times.

Much of the inaccuracy came in the first quarter when the Reds scored two goals from 10 scoring shots with the wind. When they had their chance to use the breeze St Kilda were ineffective in only managing one goal, and while they were still within striking distance at three-quarter time despite being kept scoreless they crumbled in the final term with the breeze waning and allowed the home side to walk away with an easy win.

Best were Wood, Herring and Lanigan.
