Four losses in the first five games of the season had almost been the mirror image of Melbourne's 1899 campaign where they won the first five, so victory against Collingwood was crucial.
When the game started the wind was slightly in favour of the visitors but they failed to take any advantage of it, going into quarter time a goal down. Melbourne didn't make the same mistakes, and their superior system and vastly improved performances from previous weeks swept Collingwood away.
The ruck division was dominant all day, and apart from a period late in the third quarter were easily the best side all day.
Best were McGinis, Moodie and Rippon.
