Over the years Melbourne would suffer many surprise defeats and close calls at the narrow Glenferrie Oval, and midway through the third quarter it looked as if their 1927 visit would be the first upset between the two sides.

The Mayblooms had a superior system, and their centremen were winning comfortably - but a burst by the visitors which carried them to a seven goal quarter and a lead of more than six goals. Hawthorn managed to win the last quarter narrowly but it was too late.

Collins was Melbourne's best, along with Abernethy and Dunbar.
