Four wins in a row stamped the Fuschias as one of the teams to be beat in 1928, but they had to fight for the victory in a thrilling match where the margin was never more than a few points.
Crowds were down due to bleak, wet weather but those who stayed away missed a classic. The ground had help up well considering the conditions, and while both sides fought hard they played the match in the right spirit and it went down to the wire. Melbourne's victory was even more meritorious considering they were missing key players like Chadwick, White, Collins, Thomas and Vine.
Melbourne had the breeze in the first quarter, and were the first to attack, but only managed two behinds at first and by the end of the first quarter were just a point in front. Richmond were confident, with one official saying "that is the end of it" but the home side then turned the game on its head by extending their lead by seven points into the wind.
The third quarter started with a Richmond player kicking in the wrong direction, but Melbourne could only capitalise with a behind. The Tigers took the lead, and held it by a single point at the last change.
Richmond had the last opportunity to use the wind to their advantage in the final term, but in the spirit of the day failed to take it. Dunbar kicked the first goal of the quarter to give his side the lead, and only a fumble at a crucial moment by Abernethy stopped them from scoring another one. At the other end Richmond were also wasteful in attack, but continuously threatening. Melbourne's back line held firm but could only manage behinds for the rest of the game and fell short.
The victory left Melbourne second on the table, behind Carlton on percentages.
Best were Deane, Dunbar and Taylor. Dunbar suffered a heavy blow to the head.
