Trial match form showed Carlton scoring heavily and Melbourne struggling to score at all, so the Blues went into the game as red-hot favourites.

While they won it was not as convincing as might have been expected. The home side did kick the first two goals of the game, but by quarter time they were a point behind. A high scoring second quarter saw Carlton take the lead, but Melbourne temporarily put their potency woes behind them by kicking four goals.

They then only managed one more major for the game as the Blues ran away with victory, with the visitors fading after Nolan was forced to leave the game with an injury.

Best were Sowden, Purse and Parkin.
